	Listening–gathering. Sound materializations

	Sound is an energy that vibrates through
substances and can therefore be the driver or result of movement, action or change. How
is it used and experienced? How does it
impact the landscape, the environment and
living beings? What sounds marked a turning
point? What is the rhythm of change?In this ongoing project I investigate the relationship between sound, memory, and landscape from a scientific, social, and artistic perspective. I explore how sound leaves a trace in history and spaces and how it can reveal new narratives about our world. Through photography, but also video, sound recording, and writing, Listening–Gathering is built as an open and expansive work.

Booklet that contains 3 short stories written by Laura Van Severen, a transcription of a fragment of a conversation with archaeozoologist Susanne C. Münzel on the discovery of a prehistoric flute, a composition of the patent of the first automobile and an image of the prehistoric flute.
This booklet was made on the ocasion of the exhibition “Beyond Soundscapes” at the Museum im Kleihues-Bau (Germany). Design by Studio Ingrid Picanyol.

	Land. On the brink of some formidably complex matter.

“I never cease to be fascinated by how the seemingly immovable is constantly set in motion.”

Land originates from the brief memory of a landscape. During the recurrent round-trip between the author’s two home countries, which involved crossing the Pyrenees, the view of the slowly-shifting layers of the landscape gliding past the car window seemed both mysterious and full of promise, hinting at what lay beyond and was about to be revealed. 

Land is a series of photographs that depict the gaze on that very landscape. With its vertiginous and disorienting views, the author alludes to a personal turning point that coincided with her first steps into independent adulthood and the decision to move to a place on the other side of the Pyrenees. This mountain range represents both the physical border and the personal passage that she traversed at that moment in her life. 
The photographs of the highly transformed and fragmented landscapes —both in reality and photographically—&#38;nbsp; are pieces that can be organized and fitted together in a myriad of ways. Every new combination is the possible outcome of a puzzle that has no reference image. Land is a visual journey. An exploration of photography’s potential to organize space. An approximation to a new territory, to a landscape and to an inner state of being.

	When we talk about waste, we are used to the story skipping from A to Z, from PET bottle to fleece sweater or from mixed waste to a blind spot. However, in the process of fast progress we now have an array of materials at hand which the earth cannot take back or which science cannot efficiently transform. Landfill has become the hiding place of the waste we cannot systematically digest.

For many decades (and in some countries up until now), landfill has been the most common and cheap method to get rid of waste. When a landfill site reaches its maximum capacity, it’s covered with protective layers, soil and plants to integrate this newly constructed landscape in the surrounding area. The artificial and the natural collide in vertically stacked layers.

In this deliberate act of concealing, the confrontation with the true accumulation of waste has been lost. There is no visible connection between our consumerist habits and its impact on the landscape. No reminder, no image lingering in the back of our heads that withholds us from the next short-lived purchase.

	Following the Landfill Directive implemented in 1999, the EU has established that the landfilling of municipal waste has to be gradually limited to 10% by 2035. This practice should become a marginal phenomenon giving priority to the new waste hierarchy otherwise referred to as the 3 R’s: reducing, reusing and recycling. However, the hills and holes resulting from years of landfill will, identifiable or not, shape the landscape for good.

“Strata” is the result of an encounter with the open wound of an inefficient system. Before the waste is concealed and sealed into an eternal time bubble, the photographs give a glimpse of landfill’s inside structure, portrayed against the backdrop of several EU countries who face highly divergent challenges in minimising this practice due to their different geographical, demographical and political contexts.

	What is landfill to you?
 “It is extremely complex. At a certain point in time, during the 80s, it was a slightly manageable solution –a necessary evil if you’d like– in lack of better solutions. Later it became an awful problem. The cancer of every community. Landfill puts pressure both on the local communities living around it as well as on the natural ecosystems. On the other hand it’s also a useful resource. We will end up mining those landfills. Sooner or later. Because we are exhausting natural resources. For raw materials we will have to look back at what we’ve already got. We will use them as a resource because we will have no other choice.”

You see the black impermeabilization layer in contrast with the rest of the area, which regardless to its desertification has some forests and green areas. The landfill actually looks like a dead mountain. Nevertheless, when you take a closer look, you'll see the things as I started to see them. I remember in the beginning the environmentalist agencies were concerned about the storks, as they were in danger of extinction in this area. The study said they wouldn't be able to live here and would gradually disappear. But what happened is the complete opposite. There are plenty of storks now. That is what I mean, you could think of this place as a dead mountain but it's full of life. the story about the storks is just a small example. The landfill is a source of food for several species such as foxes, wild dogs, seagulls, storks, pigeons, etc. The place is also in constant motion: the soil is compacting and the organic matter is in degradation resulting in the production of biogas and leachate. It's a living organism, not a dead mountain at all.”

Ons hele leven lang produceren we afval, maar waar blijft het? Onder de grond stoppen is vaak de goedkoopste en meest voor de hand liggende optie. Maar uit het zicht betekent niet dat het afval wég is. Hoe zullen de archeologen van de toekomst kijken naar ons consumptie- en weggooigedrag?Met veiligheidsschoenen en een fluohesje aan wandelde ik in 2016 voor het eerst een vuilstortplaats op. Tussen bergketens voel ik me thuis, maar nu bevond ik me op onbekend terrein. Hier had geen botsing van tektonische platen plaatsgevonden, integendeel. Op dit stabiele stuk grond was een heuvel aangelegd door het ophopen van het afval dat we dagelijks produceren. Een afvalberg.

De ervaring had iets overweldigends, zelfs subliem. Ik voelde afschuw, maar was ook gefascineerd. Mijn hele leven lang produceer ik – produceren wij allen – afval, en toch ontdekte ik nu pas waar het terechtkomt. Het storten van afval moet volgens de Europese wetgeving, en de daaruitvolgende afvalhiërarchie ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’, tot een absoluut minimum beperkt worden. Desondanks is het in veel Europese landen nog steeds de goedkoopste en meest voor de hand liggende methode om afval te verwerken.
 Eind 2017 bezocht ik de tentoonstelling After the end of the world&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;in het museum CCCB te Barcelona. Daar ontdekte ik Timothy Morton, een ecologisch filosoof die in de context van de tentoonstelling aangeduid werd als Minister van de Toekomst. Zijn theorieën en uitspraken vergezelden me op de veelvuldige bezoeken aan Europese stortplaatsen. Volgens hem is er niets op deze wereld dat zomaar verdwijnt. Materialen ondergaan een transformatie, of we verplaatsen ze naar een andere plek. Daarmee wordt een hoop energie verspild.

En zo gaat het ook met afval. Produceren, recyclen en verbranden zijn processen van transformatie. Storten is verplaatsen. We schuiven de stukjes van de complexe afvalverwerkingspuzzel voor ons uit tot ze uit het zicht verdwijnen. Want uiteraard wil niemand zo’n afvalberg in zijn achtertuin.Maar wat als het verbergen van deze plekken – én hun inhoud – een bewuste strategie wordt? Zodat we gaan geloven dat na het wegsmijten van het mondmasker in een container, er inderdaad een mirakel plaatsvindt waardoor het zomaar verdwijnt? Zodat we veel te nieuwe dingen kunnen blijven weggooien, zolang er plek is onder het tapijt van ons landschap? Naast de permanente discussie of storten al dan niet vervuilender dan wel veiliger is dan recyclen of verbranden, vraag ik me alsmaar vaker af wat nu in feite de langetermijnvisie (100, 500, 1000 jaar?) voor zo’n stortplaats is.Uit ruimtegebrek zijn veel vooral West-Europese landen overgestapt op alternatieve afvalverwerkingsmethodes, zoals moderne verbrandingsovens, of recyclen. Bestaande stortplaatsen worden getolereerd, maar nieuwe sites aanleggen is op veel plekken not done, omdat het te dicht bij de mensen komt. Toch zal er op mondiale schaal niet snel een reëel tekort zijn aan ruimte, en zullen er altijd afvalfracties bestaan – zoals asbest of reststoffen van verbranding – waarvoor geen andere oplossing is dan ze zo veilig en diep mogelijk onder de grond te verbergen. 

Vroeger werden de resten gewoon begraven, maar sinds de jaren 80 groeit het besef dat daarmee schadelijke stoffen in het water, de bodem en de lucht terechtkomen, met allerlei gevolgen voor de volksgezondheid en het milieu. Sindsdien worden er alleen zogeheten sanitary landfills aangelegd, waarbij beschermlagen – slecht doorlatend materiaal zoals klei, in combinatie met dikke plastic folie – onder en boven het afval worden aangebracht. Vervolgens wordt dit nieuwe landschapselement met behulp van aarde en planten vakkundig geïntegreerd in de omgeving. Zo ontstaat er een hermetische bubbel die na minstens 30 jaar verplichte nazorg plots aan zijn lot wordt overgelaten. In Nederland zijn enkele voormalige stortplaatsen omgevormd tot recreatiegebieden. De hoogte van zo’n stortplaats is ideaal voor skipistes, mountainbike parcours, golfterreinen of als uitkijkpunt.

Maar dat zijn uitzonderingen. De meer dan 500.000 al dan niet actieve Europese stortplaatsen hebben vaak geen andere ambitie dan een omheind en ontoegankelijk stuk landschap te worden.De inhoud blijft onaangeroerd, als een relikwie voor de archeologen van de toekomst, die ondanks de schat aan informatie mogelijk niet zullen begrijpen waarom de twintigste en eenentwintigste-eeuwse mens al dit materiaal dumpte.De stortplaats is een spiegel, de open wond van een inefficiënt systeem waar, als gevolg van de razendsnelle vooruitgang van de laatste eeuw, materialen in terechtkomen die niet meer thuishoren in de circulaire processen der aarde, en die de wetenschap nog niet weet te transformeren. We stoppen het weg onder de grond, uit het zicht. De connectie tussen ons consumptiegedrag, de ongeremde vooruitgang en de impact op het landschap verdwijnt.Maar net zoals een berg ook een steengroeve kan worden, zal er misschien ooit de noodzaak ontstaan om de stortplaatsen opnieuw te ontginnen. Grondstoffen worden schaarser, waardoor we gedwongen zullen worden om terug te blikken naar wat we al hebben. De stortplaats zal op zijn beurt een bron worden. Er zal geen andere optie meer zijn.

Laura Van Severen brengt stortplaatsen in beeld, in België en daarbuiten. Het zijn beelden van wat ooit was – en er altijd zal zijn. 
Decennialang was storten de goedkoopste en meest voor de hand liggende ­manier om afval te verwerken. Alleen in Vlaanderen zijn er volgens een onderzoek van Ovam meer dan 2.000 historische stortplaatsen. ‘Die zijn er gekomen na de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Tot dan ­gebeurde het in de achtertuin en was het afval ook anders van aard, er was amper plastiek’, weet Jan Feryn. Hij is zelfstandig milieuconsulent en voor­malig ambtenaar van Ovam, waar hij toezag op de toepassing van de wet­geving.
In 1999 werd op Europees niveau de Landfill Directive geïmplementeerd, met richtlijnen die de lidstaten in nationale wetgeving moesten opnemen om de negatieve gevolgen van afvalstorting voor het oppervlakte- en grondwater, de bodem, de lucht en de volksgezondheid te voorkomen of te beperken. Preventie en hergebruik werden prioritair, volgens de 3 R’en: reduce, reuse en recycle. Afval storten is de minst duurzame optie en moest evolueren tot een marginaal ­fenomeen.
Volgens cijfers van Eurostat (2018) recycleert België 54,5 procent en storten we 1 procent van alle stedelijk afval. In Portugal en Roemenië komt respectievelijk nog 48,6 en 73,5 procent van het stedelijke afval op een stortplaats terecht. Voor veel Europese landen is het van­wege politieke, economische, demo­grafische en geografische factoren een uitdaging om afval duurzaam te verwerken.
Feryn noemt een stortplaats ‘een noodzakelijk kwaad’. ‘Er zal altijd een fractie van ons afval zijn die gestort moet worden, bijvoorbeeld asbest, maar de uitdaging is om het op een zo correct mogelijke manier te doen.’
We zitten met een reeks materialen opgescheept die niet meer thuishoren in het circulaire proces en die de wetenschap nog niet efficiënt kan transformeren. Onder de grond en uit het zicht is de impact van ons consumptiegedrag en onze ongeremde vooruitgang op het landschap minder confronterend.
‘De bestaande stortplaatsen worden getolereerd, maar nieuwe stortplaatsen zijn not done. Dat krijg je in onze huidige maatschappij niet meer verkocht.’In België is geen plaats meer. Zodra een stortplaats haar maximale capaciteit bereikt, wordt ze bedekt met ­beschermfolie, aarde en planten om het nieuwe landschapselement te integreren in de omgeving. Dat dat niet altijd evident is, bewijst de stortplaats Hooge Maey aan de Antwerpse haven, met 55 meter het hoogste punt van de provincie Antwerpen.
Wat kan een voormalige stortplaats nog betekenen? ‘Begrazing kan nog, maar akkerbouw is geen optie. Die grond is onderhevig aan erosie, er wordt in geploegd, op den duur zit je op de ­beschermfolie.’ Ook bebouwing is geen optie. Misschien is dat voor België nog zo slecht niet. Een voormalige stortplaats kan ruimte creëren, een natuurgebied zelfs. Het is een plek die je vooral met rust moet laten.
In haar project Strata onderzoekt de Belgische fotografe Laura Van Severen het eigenaardige landschap van de stortplaatsen. Haar fascinatie voor de arti­ficiële ‘bergketens’ bracht haar onder meer naar Spanje, Nederland en Roe­menië. In vier jaar beklom ze meer dan 120 stortplaatsen. Door getuigenissen en observaties wil ze nuance brengen in een kwestie die vaak zwart-wit wordt weergegeven.

	El camp d’elles&#38;nbsp;
(2020–2022)

	(CAT) El camp d’elles parla del territori del poble pirinenc de Campelles a través de les veus de les dones que l’habiten, oferint un retrat del paisatge a partir de les seves experiències. Imatges i paraules ens apropen a la seva manera de viure en un poble d’alta muntanya.

Cadascuna ha fet un camí diferent d’anada i tornada. Amb els seus retrats —tant visuals com textuals— qüestionem les nocions sovint simplistes de la realitat “rural” i completem una geografia humana feta d’experiències tan variades com els corriols i les muntanyes que conformen el seu paisatge.

Aquest projecte recull una realitat en constant transformació. No només la geografia i la fesomia del poble han canviat, sinó també la manera d’entendre i viure la condició femenina. Fa només vuitanta anys, la seva vida estava sotmesa al determinisme del context, a eines rudimentàries de supervivència, a la terra i al bestiar. Ja al segle XX, aquesta realitat va ser suplantada pel treball a la fàbrica. Amb l’entrada al nou mil·lenni, l’accés a altres professions, les noves tecnologies i una millor infraestructura han ampliat el seu horitzó i han introduït formes de vida que contemplen les possibilitats del turisme o el treball a distància.

	(ESP) El camp d’elles habla del territorio del pueblo pirenaico de Campelles a través de las voces de las mujeres que lo habitan, ofreciendo un retrato del paisaje a partir de sus experiencias. Imágenes y palabras nos acercan a su forma de vivir en un pueblo de alta montaña.

Cada una ha hecho un camino diferente de ida y vuelta. Con su retrato en imágenes y palabras, desafiamos las nociones a menudo simplistas de la realidad “rural” y completamos una geografía humana hecha de experiencias tan variadas como las veredas y las montañas que forman parte de su paisaje.

El proyecto recoge una realidad en constante transformación. No solo la geografía y la fisionomía del pueblo han cambiado, sino también la aproximación y la comprensión de la condición femenina. Hace solo ochenta años su vida estaba sometida al determinismo del contexto, a herramientas rudimentarias de supervivencia, a la tierra y al ganado. Ya en el siglo XX esta realidad queda suplantada por el trabajo en la fábrica. Entrando en el nuevo milenio, el acceso a otras profesiones, nuevas tecnologías y una mejor infraestructura han ampliado su horizonte y han introducido formas de vida que contemplan las posibilidades del turismo o el trabajo a distancia.

	(ENG) El camp d’elles gives voice to the women who inhabit the village of Campelles in the Catalan Pyrenees, offering a portrait of the territory through their experiences. Images and words bring us closer to their way of life in a high-mountain village.

Each one of them has taken a different path in life. Through their portraits –both visual and textual– we challenge the often simplistic notions of "rural" reality and piece together a human geography shaped by experiences as diverse as the trails and mountains that define their landscape.

This project captures a reality in constant transformation. Not only have the geography and the physical landscape of the village changed, but so have perspectives on and understandings of womanhood. Just eighty years ago, their lives were dictated by the constraints of their environment, reliant on rudimentary survival tools, the land, and livestock. By the 20th century, this reality was replaced by factory work. Entering the new millennium, access to other professions, new technologies, and better infrastructure has expanded their possibilities, introducing ways of life that now include tourism and remote work.

	La Montserrat posa nom a cada vaca: Morisca, Poma, Viola, Pardala, Esquirola, Rodona, Oliva, Rojana, Reina. Així les crida per portar-les cap dalt a la muntanya a l’estiu, per tornar-les a baixar per Sant Miquel. Mentre la Núria va a l’hort o fa melmelada, la Montserrat agafa el Jeep o el tractor i s’enfila per pistes de bosc plenes de sots i de rocs, per arribar fins al ramat i canviar el filat o vigilar el vedell que acaba de néixer. Són dues germanes molt unides.

	A la Dolors, li agradava remenar l’herba en banyador, cosa que escandalitzava les dones grans del poble. També matava algun conill i el venia. Ho feia amb naturalitat.

	L’Amanda és una dona amb empenta. Tenia clar que volia tenir una família nombrosa i exerceix la maternitat amb vocació i eficàcia, amb abnegació. La seva visió de la vida és tan àmplia com l’horitzó que s’obre davant de casa seva. Potser per això ha decidit arrelar-se en un lloc tan recòndit i apartat del cosmopolitisme de la seva família estesa per tot el món.

	De joveneta, la Rosita va anar a treballar a la fàbrica Fàbregas. Cada dia baixava i pujava de Campelles a Ribes pel camí de la Rovira, que té uns sis quilòmetres de distància i un desnivell de més de tres-cents vint-i-quatre metres. En aquell temps, hi havia gent que anava a peu fins a Ripoll. Les dones es cridaven per marxar totes juntes i, si nevava, sortien abans per no arribar tard.

Al pic de l’hivern, quan gelava i es feien congestes de neu, els posaven una pedra calenta a dins del llit, per escalfar-lo. Les tres germanes dormien juntes; la Fina sempre al mig. De vegades, no n’hi havia prou, i la Lola preferia baixar a l’estable i dormir amb l’escalfor de les vaques.

	“M’agrada explorar. Viure aquí m’ha fet conèixer moltes coses. M’agrada menjar les tomates i les pastanagues de l’hort i aturar les vaques quan hi ha un trencant i no poden passar. El meu avi va davant i jo amb ell.”

	Aquell horitzó sobre la vall, cap a la plana, l’empenyia a marxar, a descobrir, a afrontar-se amb un futur que havia de ser molt més que el d’aquest llogarret encantador i alhora adust. Volia estudiar economia. I així ho va fer.

	“Vaig venir a Campelles, perquè soc solitària i emocional. Vaig arribar embarassada de la Irina, quan vam fer la casa, i no va ser fàcil. Passava moltes estones sola. A Campelles, has de trobar activitats per tu mateixa. Una de les que més m’agrada és anar en bicicleta fins al riu.”
